Living With Dyslexia as an Adult: Challenges, Strengths, and Support

Dyslexia is often discussed in relation to children and education, but dyslexia does not disappear with age. Many adults continue to experience challenges with reading, writing, spelling, organisation, and communication throughout their lives. However, with greater awareness and the right support, adults with dyslexia can build successful careers, strong relationships, and fulfilling lives.

Understanding Adult Dyslexia

For some people, dyslexia is identified during childhood. Others may go undiagnosed for years and only realise they are dyslexic later in life. Many adults grow up believing they are simply “bad at spelling” or slower at reading, without understanding the reason behind their difficulties.

Adult dyslexia can affect everyday activities such as:

  • Reading long documents

  • Writing emails or reports

  • Remembering instructions

  • Managing time and organisation

  • Learning new information quickly

  • Filling out forms or paperwork

These challenges can sometimes lead to frustration, anxiety, or low self-confidence, especially in workplaces that rely heavily on written communication.
