  • Breaking instructions into smaller steps.

  • Using clear fonts and uncluttered resources.

  • Offering verbal as well as written instructions.

  • Allowing alternative ways for learners to demonstrate understanding.

  • Encouraging overlearning and repetition to reinforce skills.

Schools and colleges should also ensure that staff understand relevant legal responsibilities relating to equality and additional learning needs. In the UK, educational providers are expected to make reasonable adjustments to support learners with dyslexia under the Equality Act 2010.

In the Workplace

Key areas of dyslexia training in workplace settings include: 

  • Understanding how dyslexia can affect the work context 

  • Recognising common signs of dyslexia in adults

  • Exploring practical workplace strategies to improve productivity and reduce barriers

  • Learning how to make reasonable adjustments that support employees effectively

  • Supporting employee wellbeing, confidence, and reducing workplace stress or anxiety

  • Promoting a culture of inclusion, openness, and understanding across teams 

Effective support strategies in workplace settings may include:

  • Providing clear, structured instructions and breaking tasks into manageable steps.

  • Allowing additional processing time where needed.

  • Offering information in multiple formats (e.g. verbal and written).

  • Using accessible fonts and clear document layouts.

  • Encouraging the use of assistive technology.

  • Allowing flexibility in how tasks are completed where possible.

  • Providing written summaries of meetings or key points. 

Organisations should also be aware of their legal responsibilities. In the UK, employers are required to make reasonable adjustments for employees with dyslexia under the Equality Act 2010. By developing awareness and implementing inclusive practices, workplaces can enable individuals with dyslexia to work to their strengths, contributing fully and confidently within their roles.
