The Learning Loft: A Dream Built on Experience, Understanding and Inclusion
At The Learning Loft, our mission is simple: to provide high-quality, specialist support for children who learn differently, while making that support accessible to as many families as possible.
The Learning Loft has grown from a shared dream between Natalie and me, shaped by more than a decade of working together at Frewen College, a specialist school renowned for supporting young people with dyslexia and associated learning differences.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of teaching and supporting hundreds of pupils, each with their own unique strengths, challenges and ways of learning. That experience has given us an invaluable understanding of how to help children develop confidence, skills and a positive sense of self, regardless of their starting point.
More Than Dyslexia
Although a specialist dyslexia school specialises in supporting pupils with dyslexia, many of the young people we worked with also had additional needs, including:
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder/Dyspraxia)
DLD (Developmental Language Disorder)
Working memory difficulties
Processing speed weaknesses
Social, emotional and mental health needs
Supporting these pupils every day allowed us to develop a deep understanding of how different learning profiles can affect literacy, numeracy, organisation, confidence and school life as a whole.
Most importantly, it taught us that there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach to teaching.
Every child deserves to be understood as an individual.
We Work at Stage, Not Age
One of the core principles behind The Learning Loft is that we work at stage, not age.
Too often, children who have fallen behind feel overwhelmed by learning that is simply not matched to their current level of understanding. Equally, older children can become embarrassed when they are expected to revisit skills they have not yet fully secured.
Our approach is different.
We carefully identify where a child is in their learning journey and meet them there. From that starting point, we build confidence, knowledge and skills step by step.
Whether a child is struggling with early phonics, reading fluency, spelling, handwriting, comprehension, basic number concepts or mathematical reasoning, we tailor our teaching to their individual needs.
There is no judgement, no pressure and no unrealistic expectations—just patient, knowledgeable support delivered at the right level and the right pace.
Understanding the Whole Child
Years of experience have taught us that learning difficulties are about much more than reading and writing.
Many children arrive feeling frustrated, anxious or lacking confidence because they have spent years believing they are not as capable as their peers. Often, they have worked twice as hard for half the result.
At The Learning Loft, we understand the emotional impact that learning differences can have.
We know how important it is to celebrate small successes, nurture self-esteem and help children recognise their strengths. By building trusting relationships and creating a supportive environment, we help children feel safe enough to take risks, make mistakes and learn.
Because real progress begins with confidence.
Making Specialist Support More Accessible
The Learning Loft was born from a desire to reach more families.
While specialist independent schools provide life-changing support for many young people, they are not a realistic option for every family. Likewise, some children may not have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) despite experiencing significant difficulties.
We repeatedly met parents who were searching for support but struggling to find affordable, specialist provision tailored to their child's needs.
The Learning Loft is our way of helping bridge that gap.
We want families to be able to access the expertise, understanding and specialist teaching strategies that we have developed over many years, without the barriers that can often exist around specialist education.
Supporting Schools Across East Sussex
Our vision extends beyond individual tuition.
Through our Community Interest Company, we are passionate about sharing knowledge and building capacity within local schools across East Sussex.
We believe that when schools feel better equipped to support neurodivergent learners, everyone benefits. By working together, we hope to create stronger support systems for children across our local communities.
Equity and Accessibility Matter
At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to inclusion.
We know that some families face financial barriers when seeking additional support for their children. That is why one of our long-term aims is to subsidise services for families on lower incomes wherever possible.
Every child deserves access to support that helps them thrive, regardless of their family's circumstances.
As The Learning Loft grows, we are committed to exploring ways to make our services as accessible, equitable and community-focused as possible.
Looking Ahead
The Learning Loft represents the culmination of years of experience, shared values and a genuine passion for helping children succeed.
We have seen first-hand what can happen when young people are understood, supported and taught in ways that work for them.
Our goal is simple: to help more children discover that they are capable, confident learners and to support the families, schools and communities around them in making that happen.
This is more than a business for us—it is a dream many years in the making, and we are excited to see the positive impact it can have on children and families across East Sussex.
